Sidereal vs tropical: why your sign may differ

Why Vedic and Western astrology can give you different signs — and both be consistent.

Western astrology mostly uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the background stars.

The ayanamsa

Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), the two zodiacs drift apart by about one degree every 72 years. The gap today — the ayanamsa — is about 24°. ASTRUZA uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the official standard in India.

What that means for you

If your Western Sun sign is in its first three weeks, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the sign before. Neither is 'wrong' — they are different reference frames.
