What is a Kundli?

A clear introduction to the Vedic birth chart and what it contains.

A Kundli (also called a Janam Kundli or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Vedic astrology uses it as the starting point for almost every reading.

What goes into it

Three details: your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. The place gives latitude, longitude and time zone; the time decides which sign was rising on the eastern horizon — your Lagna, or ascendant.

The twelve houses

The chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked to an area of life: self, family and resources, communication, home, creativity, health and service, partnership, transformation, belief, career, gains and release. ASTRUZA uses whole-sign houses, where each house is one complete sign starting from your Lagna.

Planets and signs

Nine grahas are placed in the chart — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Their sign and house describe how each theme expresses itself for you. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24° behind the Western tropical zodiac today.

Moon sign and Nakshatra

Your Rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth; it is central to daily horoscopes in the Indian tradition. The Moon's Nakshatra — one of 27 lunar mansions — adds finer detail and decides the order of your Dasha periods.

Dashas: timing

The Vimshottari Dasha system divides life into planetary periods totalling 120 years. Astrologers read your current Mahadasha and Antardasha as the themes that are 'switched on' right now.

A reflective tool

A Kundli is a symbolic language for reflection, not a fixed verdict. Use it to ask better questions about yourself, and treat any interpretation — human or AI — as one perspective.
