Understanding Nakshatra

Meet the lunar constellations that add depth to a birth chart.

The Moon travels through the whole zodiac in about 27⅓ days. Vedic astrology divides that path into 27 equal segments of 13°20′ — the Nakshatras, or lunar mansions.

Why they matter

Twelve signs are broad; 27 Nakshatras are more specific. Two people with the Moon in Taurus can have very different emphasis if one is in Krittika and the other in Rohini.

Padas

Each Nakshatra is split into four quarters called padas of 3°20′. Padas are traditionally used for choosing name syllables and for the Navamsha (D9) chart.

Rulers and Dasha

Each Nakshatra has a planetary ruler, cycling through Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. The ruler of your birth Nakshatra is the lord of your first Vimshottari Dasha — which is why Nakshatra links personality and timing.

In daily life

Nakshatras are used in Muhurta (choosing auspicious times), in compatibility matching, and in understanding emotional temperament. You can find your own instantly with the free Kundli calculator.
